James Bidgood, photographer of all things camp, marginal and homoerotica took all his amazing kitsch power and made the most amazing cult gay film in history. I am utterly and completely convinced this will be the best gay film I have ever seen and will ever see in my entire life. Can you imagine these photos in motion?

Oh yes. Completely mind-boggling! The images in this film are astounding and I cannot stress for whoever likes kitsch, strange and strong colour combos and a world of marginality and surreality this is a definite must-see!

Also Bobby Kendall is a dreamboat.

Gilbert & Georges

So some weeks ago at a local bookfest I raved about Pierre et Gilles and how awesome they were to my friends. They are indeed unfathomably awesome but I mistakenly said they once pictured Jesus Christ in lederhosen. It was only days later that I realised it wasn’t Pierre et Gilles who did that but Gilbert & Georges (yes, I am easily confused as that! – it’s pretty lame to say the least). So I’d like to set this straight and show a little of the awesomeness that is Gilbert & Georges. Gilbert is Italian and George English, they’re an artist duo and are mostly renowned for their performances and great photography sculptures. Their ‘photography sculptures’ (my words, sadly) are collages of several images/photos (that mostly include themselves) that are presented on glass. This sounds awkward and weird, I know, so let me give you an example.

Haha, I love them so much! They look like complete and total stuck up nerds when you see them but their sense of humour never ceases to amaze me. This weirdo humour is also combined with strong political stands and that’s what makes me adore them even more. I direct you to this page to see their video about their exposition, Son of a God. I apparently saw this two or three years ago and it has been in my mind ever since (albeit a little vague). They’ve totally enamoured me with their pure genius-like awesomeness! (My favourite part of this is obviously when they start talking about imagining Jesus in bedazzled lederhosen!)

Robert Demachy

I’m in the middle of preparing my Photography paper and though I should continue I really can’t withhold myself from updating because I just came across a lovely photographer (out of my favourite photography era!) that I’ve never gave much attention until now but have just strangely fallen in love with.

In the early days of photography as an art form artists were confused on how to look upon this new medium and if it’s indeed to be treated as a new medium in art or just a medium to imitate other art forms. Firstly, Peter Henry Emerson believes and promotes with all his might that photography is a new art form. He believes that it should convey an objective image of life and reality just as our eyes convey it (not our subjective minds). Later on though we come to my new discovery and stumble upon the French Robert Demachy. He on the other hand is also a proponent of photography as a true art form but goes on to experiment and instead of focusing on the objective reproduction of reality he prefers the beauty, interpretation, sensitivity and artistic value which we like to call, pictorialism (one of my favourite movements in art and photography).

What I love most about Demachy is due to his manipulations he creates this beautifully poetic (I hate using the term poetic but it seems particularly striking here) image that comes close to impressionistic brushstrokes at times. Especially here in Struggle.

The strokes versus the reality of the woman’s body is pretty nice in my eyes.

Again with the paint-like quality. It also looks a bit sculptured to me.

Model

This might be my absolute favourite. I really love how this bearded man oozes mysticism.

A nice one I randomly found on the web. You know, these kind of images (mostly the last) always reminds me of Patsy’s mother in Absolutely Fabulous.
